The Americas Round of CyberSecurity for the Next Generation 2014 Completed

Kaspersky Lab has announced the results of the last regional round of its "CyberSecurity for the Next Generation 2014" international student conference.

The Americas round took place on April1-2 at Georgetown Universityin Washington DC, USA. Winners of local competitions presented their research papers to a program committee of Kaspersky Lab antivirus analysts, industry experts, scientists and professors.

"CyberSecurity for the Next Generation2014" consisted of four regional rounds:the European Round, the Russia & CIS Round, the Asia-Pacific & MEA Round andthe Americas Round. The winnersof each local contestgot places in the Final Round as well as cash prizes to help further develop their projects. Topics suggested to participants this year included: emerging threats for emerging platforms; securing cloud, virtual and "big-data" infrastructure; future protection technologies; securing corporate infrastructure; and security education.

The winners of the Americas round were:
• First place – Danny Brothers from Georgetown University, Washington DC, for the presentation "NSA, The Market Maker". He also was awarded a special prize for the best presentation skills
• Second place – KangkookJee from Columbia University, New York, for the presentation "ShadowReplica: Efficient Parallelization of Dynamic Data Flow Tracking"
• Third place – Sarah Nance from Lipscomb University, Nashville, Tennessee, for the presentation "The Pathway to Security – Mitigating User Negligence"

In addition to the maincompetition, in which students, young scientists and researchers presented their projects, the "CyberSecurity for the Next Generation" programincluded activities such as expert presentations, panel discussions, presentation skills training and a cybersecurity quiz. Eugene Kaspersky, chairman and CEO of Kaspersky Lab, participated in the student conference and gave a presentation called "Cyber Inferno: Seven Circles",delivering avision of contemporarycyberspace.

Kaspersky Lab is pleased to congratulateall the winners of regional rounds of the conference and welcomesthem to the global finals in June 2014 in Stockholm, Sweden.

"CyberSecurity for the Next Generation" is an annual international event financed and organized by Kaspersky Lab. This long-term project brings together students, young scientists and researchers, leading IT security experts and university professors from across the world in a collaborative environment to present and discuss topical cybersecurity issues.
